Farmers Market Leeds – Open 7 Days a Week

Fruit and Veg Leeds Farmers Market

Leeds is blessed with several farmers markets running in and around the city, from Briggate in Leeds City Centre to Otley Farmers Market on Market Square. They run once a month on a Saturday or Sunday with stalls packed with local produce from independent producers from around Yorkshire.

For many, this has been the only way to get their wares in-front of people in Leeds City Centre. But we’ve supported many of the suppliers you’d find at local markets since opening our doors in 2009, bringing a farmers market to the heart of Leeds, seven days a week. We’re open 8am – 7pm Monday to Friday giving people a chance to pop in before or after work and also on the weekends allowing people to stock up between markets.

Some of the Yorkshire producers you’ll find filling our shelves include:

Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil

Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil

Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil supply us with quality oils, dressings and mayonnaise made from the finest cold pressed Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil. One of our favourites at home is their Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil with Garlic which we often use when cooking.

The Chilli Jam Man

Chilli Jam Man Leeds

A very well know face at many farmers markets (and the odd TV appearance), the multi award winning Chilli Jam Man has his entire range of Chilli Jams available in-store at Millies. Another firm favourite (for those brave enough) in our house, these Chilli Jams go with pretty much anything, offering a simple and quick way to add an extra tasty kick to your dishes. Always good in a sausage sandwich or even something to spice up a chicken salad. The more adventurous could try ‘Bhut Jolokia’ Infused Soda Bread or Chilli Jam Kebabs & Cake.

Tancred Farm Shop

Tancred Farm Shop

Our farms meats are supplied by the Hullah family farm in Whixley. Perfect for those wanting to know where their food comes from and how it’s cared for. Pig farmers for over 30 years, this family farm rears and butchers pork and beef (from their grass fed pedigree Lincoln Red cows) on a 120 acre farm in Yorkshire. They even make their own pig food to produce the highest quality pork. No BBQ should be without their ribs or sausages.

Bracken Hill Fine Foods

Bracken Hill Fine Foods

For a perfect start to a Sunday morning we sometimes like to treat ourselves with a freshly baked croissant covered in Strawberry Preserve with Champagne. For a cheeseboard, we have to have a something like the Caramelised Red Onion & Cranberry Chutney. Lamb Sunday Roast? Well that has to be Mint Sauce. Basically, for every meal there is a condiment from Braken Hill Farm Foods to complement the food. Using only the best ingredients and traditional methods they ensure the range of products is of the highest standard.

The Organic Pantry

Organic Pantry

The family run organic farm based  at Newton Kyme near Wetherby, North Yorkshire supplies us with organic fruit and vegetables. They are seasonal, totally organic and taste brilliant. Their wares are sold in-store and also used in the meals prepared in our award winning take-away deli.

Voakes Pies

Voakes Pies

The Voakes family have farmed in North Yorkshire on Whixley Grange Farm for over 40 years. Their range of award winning handmade pies and sausage rolls are available from our take-away deli. All of which are produced from their own stock of pigs which are bred exclusively at Whixley Grange.

Church View Farm

Producing and selling free range hen, duck, quail and goose eggs for over 50 years. For baking or just for lunch, we recommend their duck eggs.

Are we missing your favourite producer? Is there a stall you love to visit but can’t wait four weeks? Do let us know, we’re always looking to help support more amazing people.

Dishes to Dine for

Mark and Sally at Nova Scotia Farm in Leeds have created a fantastic range of meals for your freezer. Made from supreme quality Yorkshire beef, these environmentally-friendly, minimalist packaged dishes use only the freezer to preserve the food. They are ideal to keep in the freezer for your convenience.

We currently have:

Supreme Yorkshire Mince

A traditional British dish, mince Beef with a deep beefy gravy made from bouillon. Onion, carrot, swede, and garden peas all combined to create a true comfort meal. Rest assured we do not use the word ‘supreme’ lightly. Just add potatoes of your choice or perfect as a base for a cottage pie or mince hotpot … perhaps simply ladle into a giant Yorkshire pud? ‘It’s your secret ingredient’ … Enjoy!

Beef Chilli Con Carne

Mexico’s best export is enjoyed around the world. The name means chilli with meat, so that’s what we’ve done. Generously made with Supreme quality Yorkshire mince, tomato, onion and red kidney beans. Chilli spiced just how we think it should be. Not mild or silly hot. Made just as you would at home but without the hassle. All you get is the heat!! Fantastic spooned over a Jacket potato or rice. How about served in tacos or burritos, with crisp salad?, Sri Sri Amigo!!

Beef Stroganoff

From the banquet tables of Imperial Russia’s tsars. A decadently rich cream and brandy sauce binding together sauteed strips of tender steak, sliced mushroom and onion. Seasoned with a hint of paprika. Simply wonderful served with a wild grain rice and sprinkled with finely cut parsley.

Boeuf Bourguignonne

A classic French dish, the name is taken from Burgundy wine. Our prime heifer beef is recognised here by use of the feminine spelling. A passionately rich, deep and dark, ruby sauce from our red wine and tomato puree reduction. Finest cubed steak, pearl onions, button mushrooms and to give the dish some classic flavour, lean bacon and a hint of garlic. Wonderful with fresh seasonal vegetables.

This range is great to keep in the freezer in case of emergency – for when you get home after a long hard day and can’t be bothered to cook, but want some good quality food. Here we tried the Beef Chilli Con Carne, made with quality Yorkshire mince. Two generous portions that worked out at just £3 each and was gorgeous.

Steak Sandwich and Wedges

Filed under Food, Products, Testing Out

This is a great, cost effective way of having a nice steak for dinner. Tancred Field Farm in Yorkshire provide us with some fantastic Lincoln Red Sandwich Steaks.

These steaks cost £1.56 and £1.17. We made some potato wedges which cost about 30p.

We also fried some onions and mushrooms which cost about 30p and added it all to a couple of ciabatta’s which cost 75p each.

So this meal cost about about £2.45 each, was simple to make and made from local and organic products.

Whey To Go – Solgar

To maintain good health, we must all consume protein because it contains amino acids, which are the building blocks of our bodies. Amino acids fortify and form the many tissues and muscles that make up our bodies.

Traditionally, powdered protein supplements have been considered as ‘body building’ sports supplements. However, more and more people are learning how whey protein can benefit their health whatever their walk of life. People at different life stages may have special protein needs. For example, the young, the ill and the injured, older adults, weight-watchers and sports enthusiasts.

Whey protein is a natural milk-derived, high-quality protein source that is low in calorie, fat and lactose-free. Solgar selected whey protein because it has the highest biological value of any natural protein. It is also a potent source of lactalbumin and is the only protein source that offers immunoglobulins, both of which are important for proper immune function.

Research on weight loss has demonstrated the importance of high-quality protein for the maintenance of lean body tissue and reduction of body fat. Whey protein is a popular supplement for those who wish to alter their body compositions. Further research on the health benefits of whey has been carried out in the areas of cardiovascular health, immune health and ageing.

Available in natural vanilla bean, chocolate, honey nut and mixed berry flavours, plus convenient 1500mg tablets, Solgar’s Whey To Go Proteins are an easy way to add extra high-quality protein to your daily diet.

Solgar’s Whey To Go Protein blends easily and tastes great in smoothies and shakes and can even be added to sauces, cereals, muffins, pancakes and other bake mixes.

  • Protein contains amino acids, which are the building blocks of our bodies
  • Available in tablets or in powdered form in 4 delicious flavours
  • Solgar’s Whey To Go is lactose-free
  • Whey protein has the highest Biological Value of any natural protein
  • Suitable for use for those on reduced carbohydrate diets

Solgar’s Whey To Go protein is available at Millies. Please call in and speak to one of our in store advisor’s to find out more about this product.

Choc-Affair – Specialist Fairtrade Chocolates from Yorkshire

We have a new range of locally produced artisan chocolate arriving this week. Choc-Affair are based in York and produce a specialist Fairtrade chocolate. We have many valentines chocolates starting from just 99p plus all year round treats. The half kilo slabs are one of my favourite as well as the chocolate numbers and letters, brilliant birthday present ideas.

Choc-affair is not a large corporate business, disguising itself as an artisan chocolate maker with green ideals. We are what we say we are, and our ethics matter to us.

We are a small family firm that makes and packs everything by hand, and we only ever work with certified Fairtrade chocolate courveture. We try, wherever possible to re use all that we can, so paper is used through both sides on the printer for in house printing, and all scraps of chocolate are eaten, never thrown away!! This way Linda can insist her weight gain is all for a good cause for the planet!

Happy Cow

When making anything in store we always use ingredients from our shelves so we know exactly what’s in it and that it’s the best quality. It’s no different with our take away coffees – we use Clever Cow Organics milk with Fairtrade Organic Coffee. This makes a great tasting coffee which is organic, Fairtrade and supports local farmers. All this for just £1.30!

We sell Clever Cow Organics milk (skimmed, semi-skimmed and whole, all at 62p for 500ml, 96p for 1lt and £1.90 for 2lt).

About Clever Cow Organics:

Thornhill Hall Farm, near Dewsbury is home to the 300 plus milking herd of dairy cattle, and it is their milk, which is pasteurised (but not homogenised) into the Clever Cow brand.

The herd is milked twice a day, with two calving periods; in Spring and Autumn, and the herd is based on black and white cattle which have now been cross bred, mainly to Jerseys. The cows are out at grass from late January to the end of November and much of their diet is from traditional clover leys.

Here are some organic milk facts from Clever Cow Organics

  • Has all the nutritional goodness of non organic milk, but as the cow has a more natural diet there are added potential health benefits
  • Naturally higher in certain nutrients than non organic milk, such as the Omega 3 essential fatty acid- Alpha Linolenic Acid
  • Higher levels of Vitamin E, Vitamin A, and antioxidants. Drinking a pint of organic milk a day provides 17.5% of the required intake of Vitamin E for women and 14% of that for men, and as much beta carotene as a portion of some vegetables such as Brussels Sprouts
  • Organic dairy farms do not use artificial pesticides on pastures where cows graze. UK organic dairy farms are at the forefront of European organic agricultural practices. There are perceived to be many benefits to humans of consuming less pesticide residues
  • Organic cows are only given antibiotics when they are ill, and if treated the withdrawal period is at least double the recommended non-organic milk period
  • Organic cows are not fed Genetically Modified cattle feed, and their feed is also free from solvents and urea.
  • Introducing organic food into your diet is often perceived to be prohibitively expensive. Organic milk is excellent value compared to non- organic, a family of four can make the switch for less than £1 a week.
  • Conversion to organic farming means more wildlife, and a greater variety of wildlife on organic dairy farms
  • Organic cows are not fed and managed in ways that attempt to push them into production levels beyond their natural capacity

Delicious Yogurt Made Easy – EasiYo

Lactic bacteria cultures probably don’t sound that appetising, but considering how good and how important they are for you, you really should be scoffing not just a few, not millions, but billions of them everyday! They inhabit the human digestive system where they create a lactic acid environment that bad bugs can’t live in. These lactic cultures help keep your insides clean and functioning well.

When made correctly and eaten fresh, yogurt offers plenty of these nice little bacteria. Scientific studies show that besides providing calcium and protein, yogurt consumption can help increase our physical defence against infectious microbes, and normalise our intestinal flora. Unfortunately the live cultures have a limited lifetime. This means processed yogurt and some store-bought yogurts may not have any live lactic cultures left by the time they are consume.

Fortunately, a clever man named Len Light not only came up with a way of creating fresh yogurt bursting full of billions and billions of cultures, he also made it as simple as making a cup of tea!

EasiYo System

In three easy steps, with no electronics or mess, you can make perfect yogurt every time:

Making Yogurt - Step 1 Step 1. Half-fill the yogurt jar with cold drinking water. Thoroughly mix in the contents of the sachet. Top up with more cold water. Replace lid and re-shake.
Making Yogurt - Step 2 Step 2. Push the baffle down inside the Yogurt Maker as far as it will go. Pour boiling water into the Yogurt Maker.
Making Yogurt - Step 3 Step 3. Place jar inside and put the lid on. Leave a minimum of 8-12 hours or overnight until set. Then store the yogurt jar in the refrigerator (4°C).

The real yogurt bases are made from the finest quality New Zealand milk powder, and come in a large range based on fat content plus specialty ones such as Greek, Organic and Probiotic Biolife.

The EasiYo Yogurt Maker’s are now available at Millies. If you have any questions just call in and ask one of us about the benefits of the EasiYo.

Ecover Refills – Saving the Planet & Money!

EcoverSaving the planet can often be thought as expensive, boring and a selfless act. Fortunately Ecover have a different approach to environmental friendly shopping with their ingenious Ecover Refills. The concept is incredibly straight forward – instead of throwing away your plastic washing up bottle (which then takes hundreds of years to degrade) bring it into Millies and simply refill it. Not only is this even better than throwing it in the recycling bin, it also saves you money as you’re not paying for the packaging, shipping, etc. which is normally included in the final price. The environmental goodness doesn’t stop there; as Ecover can transport more products in fewer stinky lorries, you help save the Ozone!

We currently have refills available for:

  • Washing Up Liquid – Camomile & Marigold
  • Fabric Conditioner – Amongst the Flowers
  • All-Purpose Cleaner

Each can be used to fill your 500ml, 1 litre or 1.5 litre bottles.

Finally, we’ve found kids love calling with their folks to help refill, making shopping a bit more fun and teaching them recycling from an early age!
